Talking about help is not enough. Sanctions, however strong, will not stop Putin. But the current ones are a mockery. They mock Ukraine, all the countries of the former Eastern bloc that remember what it is like to be a vasal state receiving orders from Moscow and they mock history. When will you stop making us the sacrificial lambs of wars? If cutting Russia off from SWIFT would hurt Europe more than Russian federation, than think of something better!
Rečniť o pomoci nestačí. Sankcie Putina nezastavia, nech budú akokoľvek silné. Ale tie aktuálne sú výsmech. Výsmech Ukrajine aj všetkým krajinám bývalého východného bloku, ktoré si pamätajú, aké to je byť vazalským štátom ovládaným z Moskvy a výsmech dejinám. Kedy z nás prestanete robiť obetných baránkov vojen? Odstaviť Rusko od SWIFTu by bolelo viac Európu, než Rusko? Tak vymyslite niečo lepšie!

Your predecessors sold us to Hitler. They gave him Sudety, the defence line of Czechoslovakia. They believed him when he said it was his last territorial claim in Europe. They thought they were buying 'the peace in our time', but they only got a little bit more time and no peace.
Don't repeat the same mistakes.
Hovorí sa, že kto sa z histórie nepoučí, je nútený si ju opakovať.

Vaši predchodcovia nás predali Hitlerovi. Venovali mu Sudety, obrannú líniu Československa. Verili mu, keď tvrdil, že je to jeho posledná teritoriálna požiadavka v Európe. Mysleli si, že kupujú 'mier v našich časoch', no dostali iba trochu času navyše a žiadny mier.
Neopakujte tie isté chyby.
Dictator with no one in his way and everyone looking away has no reason to stop. Lukewarm sanctions will not do it. Did you forget about Chechnya? Georgia? Moldova? Did he stop at Crimea? Did he leave Belarus alone?
No.
Diktátor, ktorému sa nikto nepostaví do cesty a všetci odvracajú pohľad, nemá dôvod zastaviť sa. Nezastavia ho vlažné sankcie. Zabudli ste na Čečensko? Gruzínsko? Moldavsko? Stačil mu Krym? Nechal na pokoji Bielorusko?
Nie.
If you really think he will be satisfied with Ukraine, you are even more naive than I am. And I grew up far away from wars, in a newly free and democratic country, with the heritage of Velvet revolution – the knowledge that totalitarian regimes can be overthrown and with the belief that “Truth and Love will triumph over Lie and Hatred”. My naivety goes as far as writing these lines to precisely that world that has betrayed us in the past, hoping someone will listen. Not because of old grievances. History is full of painful pragmatic decisions, our own as well as yours. But because we need to make another painful pragmatic and necessary decision and we need to do it right this time. Otherwise, we would only get a little bit of time, lot of shame and no peace.
Ak si naozaj myslíte, že mu bude stačiť Ukrajina, ste ešte naivnejší než ja. A ja som vyrastala ďaleko od vojen, v čerstvo slobodnej a demokratickej krajine, s dedičstvom Nežnej revolúcie – s vedomím, že totalitné režimy je možné poraziť, že „Pravda a Láska zvítězí nad Lží a Nenávistí“. Moja naivita siaha tak ďaleko, že píšem tieto riadky práve tomu svetu, ktorý nás v minulosti zradil, v nádeji, že ich niekto začuje. Nie kvôli krivdám z minulosti, dejiny sú plné pragmatických rozhodnutí, naše práve tak ako vaše. Pretože musíme spraviť ďalšie bolestivé, pragmatické a nevyhnutné rozhodnutie a musíme ho tentokrát spraviť správne. Inak totiž dostaneme trochu času, veľa hanby a žiadny mier.
Many here remember what it was like to have foreign occupation army come into our country in 1968. Army of the very same Soviet Union that Putin misses so much. People under his regime don’t have much more freedom of speech as they had then. Ukraine is fighting against his forces now. Many Russians are risking prison by protesting a war they don’t want. Let’s not leave either of them alone.
Mnohí u nás si pamätajú, aké to bolo, keď na naše územie prišli cudzie okupačné vojská v roku 1968. Vojská presne toho Sovietskeho zväzu, za ktorým sa Putinovi tak cnie. Ľudia pod jeho režimom nemajú oveľa väčšiu slobodu prejavu, než mali vtedy. Ukrajina dnes bojuje proti jeho vojskám. Mnohí Rusi riskujú väzenie tým, že protestujú proti vojne, ktorú nechceli. Nenechajme ich v tom samých, jedných ani druhých.
These are not easy times. Let's throw away the illusion that there is an easy way out. Let us all learn from history. Don't let Ukraine be the next sacrificial lamb. If not because it’s the right thing to do, then because we are next in line.
I feel frustrated and powerless to the point of crying, but my tears will not help anyone. But our decisions and next steps can help. Let’s not waste them.
Toto nie sú jednoduché časy. Zahoďme ilúzie, že dnes ešte existuje jednoduchá cesta von. Poučme sa z histórie. Nenechajme Ukrajinu byť ďalším obetným baránkom. Keď nie preto, že je to správne, tak preto, lebo ďalší na rane sme my.
Cítim sa frustrovane a bezmocne až do plaču, no moje slzy nikomu nepomôžu. Naše rozhodnutia a ďalšie kroky však pomôcť môžu. Nepremárnime ich.
